One of the hazards that can significantly impact the psychological health of an individual is the clarity they have around their role. When people are unsure about what is expected of them, who they report to, how their performance will be evaluated; or are not confident in additional tasks they may be required to undertake, it can cause significant anxiety and stress.

Both WorkSafe’s Work Related Factors and the Six Hazards and Contributing Factors — specific to the construction industry, show role clarity as a significant contributor to preventing mental injury. As defined in detail in the Six Hazards, the Contributing Factors under Role are:

  • Role clarity and understanding – what’s expected

  • Answerable to many – clear lines of reporting

  • Changing requirements and expectations (i.e. added admin)

  • Performance feedback that is consistent and meaningful

  • Additional tasks and expectations added without training
